by Dorothy Canfield

About the author: Dorothy Canfield (Fisher), was an educational reformer, social activist, and best-selling American author in the early 20th century. She spoke five languages fluently, and in addition to writing novels, short stories, memoirs, and educational works, she wrote extensively as a literary critic and translator. In all, she wrote 22 novels and 18 works of non-fiction.

This, probably her most popular work, "Understood Betsy" is a children's book about a little orphaned girl who is sent to live with her cousins in Vermont. Though the book can be read purely for pleasure, it also describes a schoolhouse which is run much in the style of the Montessori method. In all, she wrote 22 novels and 18 works of non-fiction

Formatted for Kindle Readers and faithful to the 1917 Holt and Company edition, "Understood Betsy" is well illustrated and will make a great addition to your Kindle Library. Have a "Look Inside".

The Name Is the Same In fact, it is a very nice read-aloud, suitable for the younger set, I would think ages up to 9 or 10 or soWells explains that her intention was to drop Hitty into a ''more diverse American landscape.'' To that end, her adaptation stresses the sweep of American history during and after the Civil War and endeavors to add a richer cast of charactersShe was especially anxious to share all the little girls thoughts, because she felt that the trouble with most children is that they are not understood, and she was determined that she would thoroughly understand Elizabeth Ann down to the bottom of her little mindAnd then Aunt Frances shows up to collect her former charge& A sweetly old-fashioned sort of tale, with the lessons very evident but very easy to swallow5 & higher are what I consider as "keepers", in various degreesWells writes in her introduction: ''What I have done with Hitty is much like weeding a beautiful gardenIllustrated by Susan JeffersIt is very charming and old fashioned, but in a wonderful way(LogOut/Change) You are commenting using your Twitter accountFew know that Salten, an Austrian Jew who later fled Nazi-occupied Vienna, wrote ''Bambi'' in the aftermath of World War I, intending it for an adult audienceIn the final chapter, a black schoolteacher (the granddaughter of an ex-slave who appears earlier in the book) purchases Hitty on installment from a pawn shop after the stock market crash of 1929Cobb (1) J.BThe story ends after Frances has returned home, with Betsy, her aunt Abigail, uncle Henry, and cousin Ann sitting quietly and happily around the fireplace enjoying the knowledge they will now be a family for goodThe story tells of Elizabeth Ann, a 9-year-old orphan girl who goes from a sheltered existence with her father's aunt Harriet and cousin Frances in the city, to living on a Vermont farm with her mother's family, the Putneys, whose child-rearing practices had always seemed suspect to Harriet and her daughterMorton (1) Harold Horwood (1) Harper Lee (1) Heather Robertson (1) Helen MacInnes (5) Helene Gremillon (1) Henry James (1) Honor Tracy (1) Hugh Walpole (7) Irvin S.(Ages 8 and up) Post to Cancel Aunt Frances was afraid of a great many things herself, and she knew how to sympathize with timidity

But they (Aunt Harriet and Aunt Frances)thought that they chiefly desired to save dear Edwards child from the other kin, especially from the Putney cousins, who had written down from their Vermont farm that they would be glad to take the little girl into their family''Understood Betsy'' is as satisfying in its evocation of an earlier, simpler way of life as Laura Ingalls Wilder's ''Little House'' books, and psychologically more acuteVincent Millay (1) Edward Ardizzone (2) Elinor Glyn (1) Elisabeth Sanxay Holding (1) Elizabeth Goudge (4) Elizabeth Taylor (3) Elizabeth von Arnim (5) Elswyth Thane (1) Emily Bronte (1) Enid Bagnold (1) Eric Newby (2) Ernest H 79c7fb41ad
